IDA promotes commuting by bike

Blog

Amsterdam, 3 June 2022 – On World Bicycle Day we raise awareness of the (health) benefits of cycling. As the bicycle is a very popular mode of transport in the Netherlands, we motivate our employees to choose the bicycle for commuting. We are happy to see it pays off as many of our staff members choose the bicycle to get to our office in Amsterdam.

Cycling is healthy

Physical exercise has proven benefits for both physical- as well as mental health. Cycling reduces risk of cardiovascular disease by improving cardio-vascular and aerobic fitness and by reducing blood pressure. Exercising on a regular basis boosts energy levels, helps builds muscle, and improves general coordination. Numerous studies have shown that daily exercise, especially outside, can reduce stress, alleviate symptoms of depression, improve sleeping, and reduce anxiety which all improve mental health and wellbeing.

Environmental benefits

No mode of transportation is as environment-friendly as the bicycle, and it fits with our perspective on sustainability.

  • The average CO2 emission of a car is 0,22kg/km. For the average electric bike that uses grey power for charging, the CO2 emission is at 0,007kg/km, which is 97% lower than the average car!
  • With the regular bicycle the CO2 emission is of course zero, making it a very sustainable alternative.
  • And by commuting by bike, you are never stuck in traffic jams, and thus also not contributing to traffic jams.

IDA's promotion of cycling

We care about the health and wellbeing of our employees and to motivate them to use the bicycle as often as possible, we have several benefits such as kilometer allowance and a bicycle plan where staff members can buy a bicycle with a tax benefit.
