Ensuring access to breastfeeding supplies

Health day

Amsterdam, 1 August 2023 - Breastfeeding is a natural and essential process that provides numerous health benefits to both infants and mothers. It is a universal phenomenon that transcends borders and cultures, promoting optimal growth and development in babies while fostering a strong bond between mother and child. World Breastfeeding Week, celebrated annually from August 1-7, serves as a timely reminder of the significance of breastfeeding and the need for ensuring accessible and adequate breastfeeding supplies for all mothers. By promoting equitable access to breastfeeding supplies, we empower mothers to overcome challenges and provide their babies with the best possible start in life. Together, we can support breastfeeding mothers and champion the health and well-being of our future generations.

The importance of breastfeeding: a healthy beginning

Breast milk is nature's perfect food for infants, providing all the necessary nutrients, antibodies, and growth factors essential for their healthy development. According to the World Health Organization (WHO) and the American Academy of Pediatrics (AAP), exclusive breastfeeding for the first six months of life is crucial to reducing infant mortality, promoting healthy weight gain, and safeguarding against various infections and chronic diseases. Beyond its physical benefits, breastfeeding has emotional and psychological advantages as well. The act of nursing fosters a deep emotional bond between mother and child, providing comfort and security to the baby. For mothers, breastfeeding can lower the risk of postpartum depression and even contribute to long-term health benefits such as a reduced risk of breast- and ovarian cancer.

Ensuring access to breastfeeding supplies

While breastfeeding is a natural process, it doesn't always come easily to all mothers. Many women face challenges during their breastfeeding journey, such as latching difficulties, low milk supply, or discomfort. These obstacles can be daunting, leading some mothers to discontinue breastfeeding earlier than intended. At IDA Foundation we acknowledge the importance of access to appropriate breastfeeding supplies, as they can make a significant difference in overcoming these challenges. Since 2022, we supply a manual breast pump and the NIFTY cup, two essential products that can support mothers and infants with difficulty nursing.
