International Wheelchair Day: creating access to assistive technology

Health day

Amsterdam, 1 March 2022 – On International Wheelchair Day wheelchair users around the world celebrate the positive impact a wheelchair has on their lives. Access to wheelchairs can give people with mobility impairments the opportunity to live healthy, productive and independent lives. IDA Foundation recognises the need for assistive technologies such as wheelchairs, especially in low- and middle-income countries (LMICs) where resources are low and there is often no access to these essential health products. WHO estimates that currently, only 1 out of 10 people in need of assistive technology has access to it, with the need greatest in low- in middle income countries. In addition, appropriate service provision and the right fit is essential: following WHO’s guidelines, including assessment, fitting, user training and follow up for each user.

Earlier this year we announced a partnership with Momentum to improve access to assistive technology. IDA has added three types of wheelchairs to its product portfolio, each with unique features to meet the individual needs of different wheelchair users (children/young adolescents and adults with different mobility impairments) see our product information. These quality, affordable wheelchairs, suitable for less-resourced settings address the urgent unmet need for assistive technology in LMICs.

This partnership with Momentum emphasises our belief that no one should be left behind. By increasing access to assistive technology, more people of all ages and abilities will have the opportunity to lead healthy and fulfilling lives.
