IDA staff joins #TheHumanRace challenge

Blog

Amsterdam, 19 August 2021 - Today, August 19, is World Humanitarian Day. On this day we honour the people who have dedicated their lives to humanitarian causes and sacrificed their lives for the betterment of humanity. Whether it's supporting refugees fleeing from political conflict, or by providing help to victims of natural disasters, they are in the field to help others.

This year's theme #TheHumanRace, is a global challenge for climate action in solidarity with the world's most vulnerable population, recognising the devastating effects of climate change worldwide. The theme invites people to put the needs of climate-vulnerable people front and centre at the UN Climate Summit in November (COP26), as also recently highlighted by the IPCC report on climate change and accompanying climate damage caused by natural disasters, the urge for immediate climate action is greater than ever.

The challenge

The UN has created a #TheHumanRace - Strava Challenge from 16-31 August 2021, in which people are asked to complete 100 minutes of physical activity. With our commitment to sustainability and never one to shy away from a challenge, the IDA team is excited to join in for this important cause! By raising awareness for the impact of climate change, we want the world’s leaders to keep their promises at COP26, by investing in a livable climate for everyone. Because as António Guterres (UN Secretary General) said: ‘The climate emergency is a race we are losing, but it is a race we can win.’ In November the world leaders will meet at the UN Climate Summit (COP26) to further discuss climate action. Solidarity in the face of the climate crisis begins with high-income countries fulfilling their decade-old pledge of investing 100 billion USD annually for climate acting in low- and middle-income countries where the impact of the climate crisis will be experienced at its worst.

Will you also join the challenge with us? The more people join, the larger our combined impact will be!
