Making Quality Healthcare Affordable
UNITAID ‘Thank you’ campaign
UNITAID* has launched a global ‘Thank you’ campaign to highlight achievements in global health thanks to the steady support of its contributors. The campaign features children who are benefiting from UNITAID-funded HIV/AIDS treatment in an orphanage in Cambodia,a father of two undergoing MDR-TB treatment in Nepal, and a young Zambian family who, until recently, lived under the threat of recurrent bouts of malaria.
UNITAID funds two Clinton HIV/AIDS Initiative (CHAI) projects for which IDA Foundation is the procurement agent. The Pediatric project includes the delivery of anti-retrovirals and opportunistic infection drugs to 39 low- and middle-income countries, reaching over 35,000 children a year. The Second-Line project includes the delivery of second-line anti-retrovirals to 25 different countries, reaching over 56,000 patients a year
Under its MDR-TB Scale-up Initiative, UNITAID also funds the Global Drug Facility’s (GDF) Strategic Rotating Stockpile of multiple drug resistant-tuberculosis (MDR-TB) medicines. The stockpile includes treatment for 5800 patients for 6 months, and is stocked by IDA Foundation as part of our agreements with the GDF.
*UNITAID’s mission is to contribute to scaling up access to treatment for HIV/AIDS, malaria and tuberculosis, primarily for people in low-income countries, by leveraging price reductions for quality diagnostics and medicines and accelerating the pace at which these are made available.
