Making Quality Healthcare Affordable
Free Trade Agreement: lives of people living with HIV/AIDS at risk
Closed-door negotiations between India and the European Union (EU) for a free trade agreement (FTA) are entering a crucial phase on April 28.
Access to affordable medicines for millions in India and others beyond India’s borders is at stake. India is effectively the pharmacy of the developing world, but signing a free trade agreement could threaten this.
Europe is pushing India to impose greater intellectual property protection on medicines. By taken this measures registration will be delayed, duration of a patent will be extended, competition will be blocked and prices will be high. As a result lives of people living with HIV/AIDS and other diseases in developing countries are seriously at risk. In Africa, home to millions who depend on affordable generics, any impact on access to cheaper Indian medicines could be catastrophic.
